Level Two—Embedded Strategy Instruction

Levels 1 & 2 are for all students
What is Embedded Strategy Instruction?
Embedded Strategy Instruction is the implementation of learning strategies in all core classes. This level of support provides a bridge between Levels One and Three.
- A strategy is a person’s approach to a task. It includes how a person thinks and acts when planning, executing, and evaluating a task and its outcomes.
- A strategy includes a sequence of physical actions, such as writing a question on a study card, and thinking behaviors, such as making mental pictures, answering questions, etc.
What Students Do: Students are taught to use key learning strategies that help them learn in all their classes, and help them to read, write, and perform at grade level.
What Teachers Do: Teachers directly teach and then regularly use selected learning strategies in their classes. Teachers model how they approach a task, how they think about and plan for a task, and how they evaluate the success of the task once it is completed. Teachers prompt students to use learning strategies appropriate to new learning situations.
